Mayan Calendar Facts, Insights, and Possibilities
A lot of the media are saying that the Mayan Calendar predicts December 21, 2012 as the “end of the world.” For those of you who are already in the know about the history of this ancient timetable, this is utter nonsense. But as we delve deeper into some of the facts and theories surrounding this date, we begin to understand the thinking behind such doomsday predictions.
The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar started 3114 BC with an end-date of December 21 or 23, 2012, spanning a time of 5125.36 years. On this date, the Long Count calendar will reach 13.0.0.0.0, with 13 units being a 144,000-day cycle. Does this date signify the end of civilization and a resetting of the calendar, or can it even continue beyond this time?
Some Mayan civilization experts argue that there’s evidence the calendar continues beyond this date, extending even to 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, with this particular calendar setting shown on one ancient Mayan inscription. According to their mythology, this specific time period signified the previous world’s age upon ending.
Some authors and researchers of the Mayan civilization have fueled the belief in the current cycle ending in cataclysm. Accordingly, the Ancient Mayans believed that humanity experiences five cycles (we are nearing the end of the fifth cycle), and that the last four ended in major upheavals. An interpreted excerpt from one of their ancient texts, the Dresden Codex, points to a great flood occurring at the end of current cycle.
Among New-Age followers, December 2012 also indicates a time when our sun will align with the center of the galaxy, and because of this, will herald a period of higher consciousness and evolutionary change. This galactic event happens every 26,000 years.
At this moment of alignment, the galactic mass will be at its greatest, causing gravitational effects, which in turn will cause gravitational disturbances within our sun and consequently greatly influence solar activity.
What will purportedly add to the powerful effect of this alignment is the fact that when Jupiter and Saturn – the solar system’s most massive planets – are on opposite sides of the sun, the solar maximums are at their strongest. And – guess what – at the time of the winter solstice in 2012 these planets will be in such position to influence powerful solar activity.
So this “perfect storm” of a galactic alignment and heightened solar maximum occurring at the same time leads many to believe something big has to happen. Like cataclysm.
This is how it’s explained: the alignment and massive solar flares will spark major global disasters, first started by the impact of powerful solar radiation on the Earth, affecting its polarity. When this shift in polarity happens, the ocean currents could reverse, creating flooding of land masses and sparking volcanic activity. This chain reaction will bring about more climate change.
Or, at the least, this barrage of solar radiation charging the Earth’s ionosphere could cause major interruptions of our electric and communication systems. This shutting down of our systems will affect our ability to generate and distribute fresh water and produce fresh food, among other dire scenarios.
But this galactic alignment is actually a gradual process and shift that takes place over a 36-year period, and that this convergence which corresponds to the diameter of the sun has already taken place in 1998. It’s not as if for one day out of this 36-year cycle we will abruptly feel any devastating effects of this occurrence.
According to more metaphysical theories, it’s believed this cosmic shift is already happening as a spiritual inclination toward incidence of more mystical phenomena and increased awareness of how we ultimately control the direction of humanity and the manifestation of our own reality through intent.
The Mayan Calendar “end date” in 2012 is believed by some to be a turning point of our evolution. I absolutely believe in the effects of the sun on our consciousness and accept that there isn’t just one date that will affect us, but that we’re seeing a new cycle of cosmic influences that produces shifts in perception, awareness, and growth. This concern for 12/21/12 is simply a means to help us see beyond our mundane existence and perhaps make us pay attention to the whisper of the possibility of something greater shaping our destiny. If nothing else, the overly dire and calamitous predictions will plant a seed from which possibly a new type of consciousness can grow.
And this new consciousness can portend that something significant and transforming could occur; and when group-mind beliefs are changed, we could very well shift our own course without the need for catastrophes, so we shall see. It’s now 1,100+ days and counting…

That’s scary to think that some like that could actually happen to us….but has anything else that has been predicted relly happend?
Hi, Annie – thanks for dropping by and commenting!
I think what Linda is trying to say in her article here is that December 21, 2012 is just a date that is meant to remind us of the spirituality that we all-too-often forget. She doesn’t seem to be saying that anything specific – or even bad – is going to happen on that day, but that she believes we are in the midst of a general evolutionary shift toward a higher consciousness, which on the surface of it doesn’t sound like a bad thing at all! Of course, we’ve learned to associate any change, especially big ones, with a lot of upheaval, and this may turn out to be the case in 2012, too. We’ll have to wait and see.
Meanwhile, you asked if anything else that’s been predicted has really happened – well, it depends on how you look at it. If you get the chance, read my article here on the site called “Fearmongering and Facts: 2012 Examined.” I lay out what I personally think is what is going on at the moment, and I recommend that people don’t worry too much about stuff that hasn’t been proven and often doesn’t even seem likely. Don’t close your mind to any possibilities, but stay positive, keep your eyes open, and be ready for anything (that’s why I’ve got lots of good stuff on this site to help people be set in case there really IS some kind of an emergency!).
ur full of shit!!!!!!!!!11
Well, thanks for commenting there, Sandra.
Actually, I’m careful to eat plenty of fiber, so the smell you must be detecting isn’t coming from MY side of this conversation.
However, I can see why you’d be confused, as there are articles on this site that say there really MIGHT be something going to happen in 2012, and other articles that suggest there might NOT be anything special about the date…we welcome all points of view here. So if you take any trouble at all to look over the site before trashing it, I bet you’ll find something here that smells better to you. Otherwise, I’d suggest you check right under your nose to see what’s REALLY troubling you…
all has been said by so called prophets here in africa , most likely the bachwezi who happened to ancesters in ancient regime. it could be true. we should not take it for granted. but all predicters base on sign of jesus for his second coming.
Appreciate your comment!
I like to think that anything’s possible, mushaberichard. If Jesus is planning to come back in 2012, I hope I’m in line for the meet-n-greet.
The world is NOT going to end in 2012 and any ways no one knows so why are people packing up already and why are people putting up on websites how much time we have left?! ur so mean!

uuuuuuuuuuuuuu f45^#463%$3kn b%&^$%^$%^$#ch ! !! ! ! ! !
Well, Sakura, let’s take your comment apart and look at it.
“The world is NOT going to end in 2012…”
I suspect you’re right. If you’ve read any of the articles on this site (have you? I have to conclude you haven’t…) you’ll see that we are leaning heavily toward “nothin’ gonna happen in 2012…don’t panic, folks!”
You follow this with “…and any ways [sic] no one knows…”
So…do you mean to say that something MIGHT just happen in 2012 after all? If no one knows for sure, that means even YOU don’t know for sure. So we’re back where we started – wondering if something unusual is going to happen in 2012. We don’t know…YOU don’t know…so we thought it would be interesting to speculate on it. As I mentioned earlier, we lean toward probably nothing nearly as bad as a lot of people are claiming, mainly because they have nothing much to back up their claims.
“…why are people putting up on websites how much time we have left?! Ur so mean!”
Think of the clock as a countdown toward something good – like how many shopping days ’til Christmas! You like Christmas, don’t you? That time of peace and goodwill toward men – or even innocent website owners who thought it would be interesting to take a subject a lot of people are already discussing and offer them a chance to give their own thoughtful opinions on. If you actually HAVE a thoughtful opinion, please let us know!
As for the line of hieroglyphics at the end of your comment, I’m not sure what that means, unless it’s a long string of comic book swearing. Not really a cogent argument either for or against.
Hi Micah! Just discovered this, and love the concept (“global solutions”) and content of your site. And thanks for re-posting my article! My point in writing it was first, to lay out some facts and theories around the now-infamous date; second, to highlight what beliefs and conclusions are being created based on these; and third, to underscore we have the free will to choose what outcome as a whole we will experience. Do we want to draw to ourselves calamities that will force change upon us? Or do we choose to make change happen within ourselves first without the need for calamities? It’s all about choice, and that simply any predictions or conversations around the possibilities for upheaval help us wake up and determine which path we would rather take.
Linda, glad you could join the discussion! You’re very welcome – I chose your article as one of the more useful contributions to the thinking on the subject. If you’ve read some of the comments it’s generated so far, it seems to attract the thoughtful and the thoughtless in about equal measure. But I’m sure anyone who actually took the time to read your article would see that what you say makes a lot of sense, even if it isn’t necessary to agree with all of it.
I’m trying to start up a forum where this fascinating topic can be discussed, but it’s early days yet, and forums are notoriously difficult to launch. So far the comments have been limited to specific articles. But hopefully, I can attract enough intelligent people who have something useful to contribute to a discussion on 2012 and what it means. Even if fate has no special plans in store for us at all on that date, just the idea that so many people are going into hyperdrive about the whole subject is a topic worth exploring in itself! Other doomsday deadlines have come and gone with nothing to show for the hysteria, and so may December 21, 2012; but never before have so many people bought into the idea that *something* might really happen this time, and that collective impetus all by itself might just be the catalyst for change – but what kind? and can people of goodwill steer it in positive directions? Articles like yours get people thinking, and offer them alternatives to the “inevitable damnation” POV that so many fundamentalist groups are locked into.
Yes, forums can certainly pose certain challenges; however, I’ve discovered a lot about people through them! (and really good advice.)
It does take time but it looks like you’re off to a good start. Forums are a great way to attract people, build up the links on your site, and good content will eventually attract more like-minded visitors.
I agree that even though the 2012 event may amount to another Y2K, opening up a discussion is certainly a powerful way to affect group-mind thinking and consequently affect related outcomes. Any discussion that gets people pondering about how they can shape their own future is worth the effort!
I wish you the best!
Linda
I dont believe in this, because nobody knows when or what time the world will end. I believe that God will resurect a few thousand people, but I dont think a planet so massive and atmospheric will end. In 1.3 billion years, the world might come to an end, and that might happen because of global warming. But I dont believe in the gravitational pull decreasing. So please, everyone stop thinking you know what is going to happen on December 21, 2012, and enjoy life the way you are supposed to! Linda Sue Anderson, I also believe in your diarama of the global contractions. It is very understandable. However, Micah, I dont believe the world will end in 2012, predicted by Mayan ancestors from thousands of years ago! Thank you, and please try to not freak out everyone!
Hi, thanks for coming by and offering us your opinion, Jessica.
I hope you really took the time to read what I’ve written on this subject. As it happens, I DON’T believe the world will end in 2012…at worst, I’ve just pointed out that there are some people who apparently do. So if anyone is “freaking out” about this (remote) possibility, I can sleep at night knowing it wasn’t me who led them to it.
fuck all ya’ll
Thanks for the offer, Ed, but my needs are being met. Enjoy browsing the site!
I think somethings happening!! Even now were having more violent weather etc..
Luke, I certainly agree that the weather patterns are changing. Scientists have been pointing out that there are meteorological shifts happening on a global scale, and that we’re due to go through a rough time in the future, in terms of severe weather, increased volcanic activity, etc. None of this has anything to do with the date of 2012 necessarily…it’s just a plain old scientific fact that we’ve got global warming and an expected peak in sunspots due in a couple of years, both factors that help explain the wild weather. I don’t want to rush to conclusions that there is anything significant about the fact that this stuff all happens more or less around a particular date.
Our best bet, like always, is to just pay attention, plan for the worst while hoping for the best, and take it from there. Be sure to bundle up!
it might and it might not happen but chaces are that it will
Well, rubicel, there’s a school of thought that says that WE decide what’s going to happen, based on our own beliefs and actions. So if you feel fatalistic about it, and believe that it’s inevitable that something terrible will happen, you could be unknowingly adding your energy to the eventual, *unpleasant* outcome.
Since the scenarios that indicate the worst is going to happen are a lot less convincing when you really take a good hard look at them, maybe if we all do a little more research into it, we can start feeling positive that our future has good things coming rather than disaster. My take on it is – if you can’t really know one way or the other, expecting the best while preparing for the worst is a nice middle ground to take!
All the people who actually believe in this are going to feel really stupid and are listening to the tv and internet to tell them the truth because no one can tell the future.
And also the world was suppose to “END” like.. ALOT OF TIMES BEFORE so why should we believe in this anyway1!!!!??????
It’s true, no one can tell the future, as far as we know. But I figure it never hurts to get informed as much as possible…come to my own conclusions. Gotta get the information to form an opinion from SOMEWHERE – although if you don’t like the Internet and TV, you can always find a good book on the subject.
This is also true. There have been a lot of doomsdays that have been predicted – then come and gone and nothin’. This could very well be another case of that. Another Y2K build up and let down.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, Is…y.
Guys is not turn they said the world was going to end 2000 and 1964 i think and look i am stilll here and nothing happened
I think if anyone out there takes a good hard look at what is happening to the world as far as weather patterns, global economy, and our universe, they might see that there are major changes taking place. This “end date” in december 3 years from now may not be a real thing but i think it is important to pay attention to the changing world around you…and react accordingly. To sit back and pretend like everything is “normal” is kind of foolish…don’t you think?
Michelle – you’re right, there have been many times in the past when people predicted the end of the world, and as we all know, the world is still here. Of course, the world DOES have to end sometime, but we don’t really have any way of knowing when that is – scientists think it will be billions of years from now, when the sun finally burns out, and if that’s true, we have plenty of time to figure out a solution. If the earth is hit by an asteroid, WE get wiped out, but the earth will go on and life will reappear eventually. Great for the earth and future life forms, not so great for us. If we blow ourselves up with nuclear weapons, again – life will eventually come back, and with any luck, they won’t have any memory of us, the cosmic screw-ups.
So I guess it depends on what we mean exactly when we say “the world is going to end.” End how? For whom?
Tom, I couldn’t agree more.
I’m trying with this site to get the point across that we better sit up and pay attention, cuz maybe there’s gonna be a test soon. It doesn’t mean we’ll fail it, and it doesn’t mean we’re doomed, but it sure is time to start taking the lessons seriously. What’s the point of being given challenges and chances to learn and improve if we just squander them? Let’s at least take a “what if” approach and debate what our options are *just in case* the worst actually happens. At the same time, we should live as if we have a future, because the chances are that we do. We just need to take difficult moments in history like the one we’re experiencing now and use them to help us decide what that future ought to look like.
